Preparation of Application Documents
The application documents typically consist of a cover letter, a tabular resume, and copies of the latest certificates. Optionally, internship certificates or work samples can also be included. It is especially important that all documents are error-free and presented in a clear, easily readable form.
Cover Letter
The cover letter should be precisely formulated and provide the potential training company with an overview of the applicant’s motivation. It is important to clearly express why the applicant is interested in the training profession and the respective company. The letter usually begins with a salutation and a brief introduction. Then, the applicant should mention their interests and strengths related to the training. References to relevant internships or school subjects associated with the training strengthen the application. The letter ends with a friendly remark about the willingness for a personal interview and a farewell.
Resume
The resume provides an overview of the applicant’s educational background and relevant experiences. When applying for a training position, a one-page tabular resume is generally sufficient. It lists personal data, educational background, completed internships, special skills (such as language or computer skills), and hobbies and interests. It is important that the resume is clearly structured and contains all relevant information without gaps.
Certificates and Attachments
The application for a training position includes the latest school certificates and, if applicable, proof of completed internships or part-time jobs. These documents should be cleanly scanned and attached as PDF files if the application is submitted digitally. In the case of a postal application, high-quality copies should be ensured. The certificates give the employer an impression of academic performance and can be a decisive factor in the selection process.
Deadlines and Application Paths
Many training companies publish their calls for the upcoming training year already in the summer or fall of the previous year. It is advisable to inform oneself early and to submit the application on time. When applying for a training position, there are different paths: many companies prefer digital applications via their career site or email. However, some companies still accept postal applications. Regardless of the application path, it is important to carefully follow the company’s requirements and include all required documents.
The Interview
If the applicant is invited to an interview, it is a positive sign. This interview aims to get a personal impression of the applicant and to verify their motivation and suitability for the training. The applicant should prepare well for the conversation, research the company, and anticipate typical questions regarding their strengths, weaknesses, and goals.
Trial Work and Aptitude Tests
In some industries or for certain training professions, a short trial work or an aptitude test is conducted as part of the application process. These tests typically assess basic professional knowledge, logical thinking, and sometimes personal skills such as teamwork or stress resistance. Good preparation for these tests is important to meet the requirements.
